squish teh belly [Jul. 18th, 2008|10:03 pm]

=( spots

told you she had spots.

this is the freakiest rash i've ever seen, but there's nothing about it yet that makes me panic. this photo was taken 3 days ago and her face has cleared up and the spots seem to be getting lighter and less pronounced, but still. she doesn't itch, she has no fever, she's in an awesome mood all the time, and she's eating like a champ.....i guess it's just one of those baby things, yo.

but man, look at that belly. it's so made for the nom nom.

We've elected to stay home and can the trip. Too many uncertainties re: my mood/pain levels today. We made the right choice. I'm recuperating in bed, though still experiencing a lot of pain. Luke's filling his tummy with Island Bay saussages and whitebait fritters and brewing cider. I'm rather gutted to not be on the road, but relieved at the same time. Cozy and warm with the cats as Luke buzzes and hums around the place, being a happy chappy.

"...beneath his robes beats a heart of metal." [Jul. 18th, 2008|02:34 pm]

Brother Cesare in action with his band

now that man has THROAT!

At first glance, Cesare Bonizzi looks like the archetypal Capuchin monk - round-faced, stout, with twinkling eyes and a long flowing white beard. But beneath his robes beats a heart of metal.

Brother Cesare is the lead singer in a heavy metal band which has just released its second album.

A former missionary in the Ivory Coast, he lives in a small friary in the Milan hinterland.

The 62-year-old monk's love affair with heavy metal began when he attended a Metallica concert some 15 years ago.

"I was overwhelmed and amazed by the sheer energy of it" he says.

Brother Metal

Hard rock and heavy metal have, over the years, been criticised as the work of the devil.

It's a claim which Brother Cesare, also known as Brother Metal, says is nonsense.

He started playing and recording cassettes, firstly with "lighter" metal music, but gradually he realised that what really moved him was the hard core.

People think that I am in fancy dress, they can't believe a robed monk is on the stage playing their music
Brother Cesare Bonizzi

The members of his band were at first sceptical at the idea of teaming up with a Capuchin monk but their doubts soon evaporated.

"Five minutes after meeting Brother Cesare I decided to go ahead, because he manages to convey so much energy, that other musicians and youngsters often don't manage to express," lead guitarist, Cesare Zanotti, told Reuters.

Sex, drugs and alcohol

Brother Metal recently appeared in the Gods of Metal festival in Italy, along with giants such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Slayer, playing to a crowd of leather-clad hard-core metal fans.

"It was wonderful being there among all these young people" he told the Rome newspaper La Repubblica.

"The only problem was that at one stage out slipped a "what the f…" because each time some people think that I am in fancy dress, they can't believe a robed monk is on the stage playing their music".

With a booming voice, Brother Metal belts out lyrics that are decidedly gritty, talking about real-life issues and not shying away from sex, drugs and alcohol.

He does touch on faith and religion but is adamant that he is not seeking to draw people to Catholicism through his stage performances.

Video clips of his performances on YouTube have helped spread his popularity and fan base.

Devotion to God

His second heavy metal album, "Misteri" (Mysteries) has just been released.

In a sign of Brother Metal's eclecticism, it drew inspiration from a group of women in southern Italy who sang about Mary, the mother of Jesus, and a heavy metal version of that song is on the CD.

Other songs talk about how alcohol warms the heart but excess drinking can damage the liver, and how important sex is to man.

Brother Cesare says he has never had any trouble with his superiors over his choice of musical career and would like to send his new album to the Pope. "He is a music lover and metal is music!" he says.

While Brother Cesare always wears his traditional brown robe and sandals as a reminder that he has chosen a life of devotion to God, he is keen to distinguish established religion from faith, and from proselytising.

"I do it to convert people to life, to understand life, to grab hold of life, to savour it and enjoy it. Full stop" he says.

Amen Brother

[mood |wtf is that smell?]

i really need to get my ass in that bedroom so i can finish today's painting goal, but dammit...i needs coffee!

so, bullet points of love/notlove:

1. i'm feeling overwhelmed with stuff and things
2. we're making jam next friday!!! woo!!!
3. i've put out the feelers for soap making; suddenly, oils have become expensive
4. i hate painting
5. our pg&e bill came....456.00$ *crai*
6. i have no idea what to make for dinner tonight
7. i watched the north american gamer championships last night -- MUCH FUN!
8. in the above championships, girls only got to play against girls. lame boys didn't want to be schooled by a girls. ha!
9. i'm sitting at the dining room table and i swear to gawd, i smell stinky socks but there are no stinky socks around. wtf?
10. you know, haunted houses often have "smells" that come and go. i'm just saying.
11. when making lists like this, there needs to be consistency; if you write in complete sentences w/periods at the end on some items, then all items must be complete sentences with periods at the end otherwise you go to hell.
12. i'm going to burninate. :(
13. i'm also going to make paper this weekend maybe! i figured i have ALL these roses, why not use some of the petals in the paper??? DUH!
14. what are YOU making for dinner tonight? (ideas and recipes appreciated)
15. last night seija came home tired, cranky, and in a hitting mood. she had three time outs before dinner. o.O the time outs weren't very effective because she kept looking at the painty walls from her crib and talking about them. *sigh*
16. but she did go to sleep at 7 and stay asleep until 7 this morning. WOOT! we're back on track -- it's been nice having a few days where she sleeps past 6.
17. jeebus? he loves the little chilrens.
18. i need to set up another etsy account because i forgot the email addy and password associated with my old account. =( lamer!
19. i hope microsoft buys my company.
20. i actually sort of need to be a company before they can buy it, right?

ok. time to paint. i have the clash on the 'pod and i'm ready to be running with the po po on my back.

Worst pain known to man [Jul. 18th, 2008|09:14 pm]

amphigori
Since my birthday I've been wrestling with severe, severe, severe pain. I almost went to the ER *instead* of my birthday dinner. I've been under my dentist's care for TMJ which I thought it was. Well, after days and days of crippling pain, and probably the worst panic attack I've ever had, I got hauled away to the ER in an ambulance. :(

I have what's called 'Trigeminal Neuralgia' which Wiki cheerfully describes as: stabbing, mind-numbing, electric shock-like pain "...believed to be the most severe type of pain known to humanity."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trigeminal_neuralgia

I've felt this pain before. For a long time - the first time was after a fairly deep filling. I'm sure that's what triggered it. My dentist at the time disbelieved my symptoms. Ever since then, I get this pain at odd times, often triggered by hot or cold - but sometimes there's no trigger. In hindsight, I realise it does come and go. I've never felt it for days on end, for weeks at a time. I'm good with words, but I can't describe just how consuming this pain is. It hurts to the very core of me. It is fire and ice and acid and needles and daggers and kicks to the head and my teeth being pulled out and scissors in my eyeball *all at the same time*.

The mega panic attack was caused by my new medication, which I have now been advised to stop for the time being. Sigh. The nerve crap has come about at the same time as starting the pills, so we're going to see if there's a connection and re-visit using anti-depressants.

There are a number of treatments for this nerve thing, all of them iffy, some of them require life-long medication (anti-seizure pills). I'm kind of getting all pilled-out at the moment. I don't mind having this every now and again, as I've had it since I first got it. But every day? Dozens of times a day? No way. It's hit hard when I've been in public - sometimes so hard I'm reduced to rocking back and forth, trying not to drool and not being able to speak. Not a good look at all. So if it keeps on like this, then I'll do whatever I need to do.

Talk about kicking a girl when she's down. Bless the ER crew at Wellington Hospital though.

Food is wonderful [Jul. 18th, 2008|04:34 pm]

[mood | mellow]

I love to cook. This is, in large part, thanks to my mother encouraging me when I was younger - helping out when making dinner, attempting to bake slices and biscuits, and generally finding my way around the kitchen.

It's her birthday today - she would have been turning 49 again (if you know what I mean). So I thought I'd share some of my favourite recipes. Some I learned from her, others I've discovered myself. But all are very, very yummy indeed.

([info]starfirenz and [info]moonspirit43, I hope you find them useful!)

First up is lasagne. Lasagne was the first meal I ever successfully cooked - and I've made it many many times over the years. The first recipe is the meat-version. I don't make it any more (having gone vegetarian), but it's damned simple and very nice. The second recipe is the vegetarian version, and I make it about twice a month these days.

Lazy Lasagne - for the meat eaters )

Spinach Lasagne - vegetarian )

Next we have one of my favourite winter meals: the risotto. Many risottos are pretty basic, with just mushrooms, or cheese. This one has a few more ingredients, but is uniformly adored by all who try it!

Leek, Mushroom and Lemon Risotto - vegetarian )

What Ben and I call pottage is a basic rice/lentil porridge with yummy spices. I can imagine being able to cook this when camping - all it needs is a saucepan, a frying pan, and a little bit of patience. The end result is warming, tasty, and very easy to save for leftovers.

Pottage - vegan )

Another favourite in our house is the pasta bake. There are lots of variations I make on this - some with tuna, some without, some with olives and capers, some with spring onions. But the basic recipe - endlessly adaptable - is below.

Pasta Bake - fishy or vegetarian )

And, finally, there's a recipe that's a little more complicated, but well worth it to see the expression on people's faces when they try it. It's a casserole - with a meat-free twist.

Eggplant and Mushroom Casserole - vegetarian )

I hope some of you try making them - and I hope you enjoy them as much as I do! Let me know :)

And mum - happy birthday. Miss you.

a list of to-do [Jul. 17th, 2008|11:06 am]

liminal_space
(when we get our next set of kittens, i'm going to name one of them todo, i swear)
(oh, and there's a dead tree rat in our backyard, so i can't mow in that area since dead tree rats have the plague. i think bean killed it. :( poor thing.)
(and my curtains for the living room? TOO SHORT and NOT ENOUGH. sigh sigh sigh. they need to be taken back, new ones plus some ordered and more time spent waiting. gah.)

...

after next week, i'm basically going to parole seija from baby folsom for basically the rest of the summer (except a day or two here and a day or two there). so i basically have a total of six working days to get things done that basically can't be done as easily when miss bebe is around. SIX DAYS! that's not a lot, is it? so i'm going to basically make myself a list and next friday around 4p, i'm going to either have appreciation moments and tell about all the stuff i did OR hang my head in utter shame and tell you what great movies i watched during the day.

basically lori's list )

Day of Squee [Jul. 17th, 2008|10:10 am]

amphigori
Met folks at Monsoon Poon for dinner and got a lovely book and card and pin from brother Tom, and a very cool box of beautiful beads and findings from Dido and then sat down at our over-large and conversationally awkward table. Frank then withdrew an envelope and handed it to me. I withdrew a certificate inside which read:

"Bank of Jack's Friends - Promissory Note For One Drawing Tablet!"

It made my brain crash. I thought I was getting paper drawing tablets, like ... visual diaries/sketchbooks - and I was mighty chuffed! Though a bit confused as to why I had a piece of paper instead of said sketchbooks.

Then, my brain caught up and I cottoned on to what was up. And was rendered speechless and very very humbled. And so now, when I return from my birthday trip to Kaikoura and Hanmer I'll be eagerly awaiting the delivery of a 6 X 8" Wacom Intuos 3 drawing tablet.

CUE MUCH SQUEE!!!!

Thank you (again) to all of you guys who pitched in to get this for me. I'm so excited to play with it I can't hardly wait. You all can dabble with your iphones - I'll be lovingly getting to know my Intuos 3!

And cheers to everyone who left recommendations on my previous post about tablets. Very helpful.

The following day I got a ACTUAL LETTER in the POST from Giffy! With words written in ink and cute stationary and a post card for Luke. It was filled with many words of awesome and nice. All of this is making me feel very humbled and quietly grateful and appreciative. And it makes me aware of how difficult it is for me to accept gifts/surprises and compliments. I'd much rather be the one doing the giving!

Day after tomorrow, Luke whisks me away for our boat ride and road trip. We're staying at a beautiful house in the woods with an outdoor tub, mountain bikes and a tobbogan! I will be sledding one way or another.

Luke also gave me the mega Lush Karma gift pack of awesomeness filled with every kind of Karma scented product. That's my favourite scent, and I'm keeping the box in my studio at the moment so I can smell it alll day long. It is wonderful!

So thank you, whole heartedly, to everyone who has sent in birthday wishes, texts, cards, pressies or chipped in for the tablet. Truth be told I was really dreading my birthday this year and feeling utterly down about the whole affair. You've all helped turn it into something beautiful and special.

in the 7 years the husband and i have been married, the only time we've slept in separate beds was when one of us was out of town. now, tonight, with both of us in the same house, i'm seriously considering sleeping on the couch because:

a) that flipping blueberry makes me want to kill at 3 a.m.
b) he has to be up at 1:45 a.m. to do a server restart
c) he seems to be sick. and has germs. and if i sleep in the bed with him, those germs will migrate over to me.

i dunno, maybe i could just sleep with a lemon under my pillow and i'd be ok.

anyway. g'night.

deer kilz, u r mssy! [Jul. 15th, 2008|03:49 pm]

liminal_space
ok.

so.

i've been getting sick and tired of seija's room being a rich marooooon color and have been getting sick and tired of all the excuses why that room has not been finished by now. today, bumps and all, the girl went off to baby folsom and i braved vampire spiders and falling baby furniture (those damn swings are effin heavy, yo) to get to the very most backest set of shelves where, i thought, the paint supplies were.

some were there! there was the 75 gallon bucket of kilz, the bucket of paint for her room, the bucket of paint for our room, and a huge orange bucket that i thought had the brushes/rollers in it. after being strong and manly, i got stuff from the very most backest set of shelves to the front of the garage only to discover that my supplies were scarce!

oh. noes!

i had spackle, a spackle spreader, a 2" brush, the kilz, a straight edge thinger that supposedly lets you eschew the blue tape, the blue tape i want to eschew, and other bits and pieces, but THERE WERE NO ROLLERS!!!! wtf!? i'm almost sure we bought some....maybe.

anyway.

so i filled nail holes and whined to myself about the fact i don't have my sanding block. and at that point, i was just going to tape things off and do prep work, but i decided i wanted to play with the kilz. so i stirred and stirred and sirred some more, poured about 2 pints into a plastic container w/lid, got my 2" brush and went to town.

things i've discovered:

a) painting is sort of soothing to the soul.
b) the straight edge thinger, if i can figure it out, will work WELL which means less blue tape work. yay!
c) the straight edge thinger is sort of hard to figure out. =(
d) .....

d) is that painting obviously makes one tired, since i laid down at 2:30 and got up 15 mins ago. woah!
e) a roller would be really nice
f) painting is NOT rocket science! if the cut in stuff i've done is fubar, i can paint over it. WELL DUH

so this nap i took was good. the new couch we have is squishy and fluffy and makes for good relaxing. the only bad part was that i had a dream that we had moved back to the midwest. well, it wasn't so bad....i got to have a horse. that was nice!

...

paul's on call this week. last night the blueberry kept going off and waking me up so this morning i was as tired as he was. tonight he has to get up at 12:30 to do a remote something or other to a server and then thursday, he has to go IN at 12:30 a.m. to do stuff.

blargh.

if it gets too bad, i'm going to just spend the week on the couch and dream of horse farms.

ok, time to get the mail (pg&e bill may be there -- if i die, that's why) and do some tidy work before the fam gets home. bye!
